The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated August 19. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.

You’ve got to feel bad for Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) in Emmerdale. All he wants is a happy ending with Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley), but a discovery in today’s episode has increased the chance that he isn’t going to get one.

The former couple have been plotting to run away from the village ever since Billy told Dawn that Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) put him in hospital. Believing her soon-to-be husband was a violent liar, Dawn was done.

The thing is, Joe didn’t attack Billy – Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) did. He was at the depot trying to stop mate Steve (Jason Done) from doing the place over, and was forced to take action when Billy got in their way.

With Billy and Dawn oblivious to the truth, they’ve been busy trying to pack up their entire lives without Joe finding out. They’ve also accepted help from Caleb and Ruby Miligan (William Ash and Beth Cordingly) who, to be honest, are only assisting in the plan because they’re keen to see Joe’s life fall apart.

Billy and Dawn’s aim was to leave Emmerdale for Spain yesterday, when Joe and Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) were on the way to Prague for Joe’s stag do. Plans quickly changed, as Dawn and Billy discovered that Joe had organised a joint stag and hen do instead.

The vibes were weird, that’s for certain.

Neither Billy or Dawn could work out whether Joe had revealed this surprise because he secretly knew what they were up to, or whether he had done it because he just really loves his partner and the family he has at Home Farm.

Things got even stranger in today’s episode, as Joe invited everyone for some food at The Hide. Billy and Dawn remained on edge, still not convinced that Joe’s kindness was genuine.

Somehow, Kev got word of the event happening at The Hide and decided to head along for some free food. As he hit the booze, Kev spotted Billy sitting by himself.

Drunk, Kev made a comment to Billy about how they’ve both been in prison, and then blurted out that he attacked him.

As Billy processed the news, he was watching Dawn dance with Joe.

This revelation has left Billy at a crossroads. If he tells Dawn that Joe didn’t attack him, there’s no reason for her to leave. They’ll get married, and Billy will be left all alone.

If Billy doesn’t tell Dawn, the plan to exit Emmerdale can go ahead. They will move to Spain, start a new life with their children, but Billy will have to keep the truth about his attack a secret forever.

Which path will he choose?
