A much-loved BBC star died completely penniless − even leaving his wife with nothing after his death. Documents seen by the High Court showed the value of his assets was exactly £0.

Nicholas Ball was best known as Terry Bates in EastEnders, but he also had a slew of other roles, including stints in Hazell and Footballer’s Wives. But tragically, the EastEnders legend died at the age of 78 in 2024 after a brief illness.

As the process of filing his death was carried out, records were found which indicated that Ball, from Porchester Square, London, left his wife with no inheritance. A High Court document reveals that administration of the estate was granted to his wife Ayda Kay.

It stated: “The application has started that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom amounts to £0 and the new value amounts to £0.” This meant that Nicholas had nothing in any of his bank accounts, nor did he own any substantial assets that could be transferred, according to the Express.

The couple tied the knot back in 2019 after being together for over 20 years, with the pair going from strength to strength in their long-lasting romance. Ayda announced his death in June of 2024 last year, leaving fans utterly heartbroken at the news.

She wrote: “It is with the heaviest and broken of hearts, that I share the loss of my beloved Nicky-Nicholas Ball.” Fans were stunned at the sudden death, and shared their messages of condolence to a heartbroken Ayda.

Ball had previously been married to actress and psychologist Pamela Stephenson from 1978 to 1984. The pair eventually split up and she later began dating comedian Billy Connolly.

Ball had an illustrious acting career but reportedly found it difficult to secure roles after his private detective series Hazell concluded. He had played a variety of supporting roles including Z-Cars, Softly Softly: Task Force, The Young Ones, Bergerac, Tales of the Unexpected, and Holby City.

Director Keith English offered a heartfelt tribute to him following his death, stating: “Fabulous as star of hit TV show Hazell in the 1980s, Nick was a terrific actor − kind and generous. He starred in our short film Top Dog in 2001 in which he was great and we became life-long friends with him and his wife, Ayda Kay.

“Indeed, we were honoured when the pair of them asked if they could be married in our garden in 2019. A fabulous affair.

“One of our fondest memories was going to see Jerry Goldsmith play The Royal Albert Hall with him and his great friend Mel Smith. Mel had hired a box for the show.”

He later said: “Nick was a loving husband, friend, and a wonderful actor. We enjoyed every minute of his company. Farewell and bon voyage.”
