Emmerdale’s Dr. Todd announced her departure from the village during the latest episode. ITV soap viewers will know that Dr Caitlin Todd (played by Caroline Harker) is currently making Charity Dingle’s (Emma Atkins) life very difficult.

After bullying Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) for months on end, the evil doctor set her sights on Charity, after learning that Jacob’s newborn daughter, Leyla, wasn’t his biological child – she’s actually Charity’s daughter with Ross Barton (Michael Parr).

Dr. Todd asked for £10,000 in exchange for her silence, then upped the blackmail to £100,000 after learning that Charity owned half of The Woolpack. Charity began looking for a buyer interested in her share of the pub, and the ITV legend eventually reached an agreement with Kim Tate (Claire King).

However, after noticing Charity’s strange behaviour, Kim decided to pull out of the deal. Feeling like she had no other options, a drunk Charity and Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) broke into Home Farm on Wednesday (June 3) to try and steal from Kim’s safe.

Elsewhere, Todd grew restless after not hearing back from Charity about her money. The doctor then cornered Charity in the back room at The Woolpack, saying: “I’m getting impatient.”

“You’ll get [the money], okay? I promise,” Charity replied, adding: “But once you do, you need to go immediately, and that means you leave me alone, you leave my family alone, and you leave Vanessa alone.”

Later, Todd shared some news with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) at Tug Ghyll. “I’ve got a new job,” she announced. “I need to start packing. It’s in Sheffield. It starts next week.”

“Wow, that’s soon,” replied a disappointed Vanessa, with Todd adding: “I’ve got to get there fast, get set up and all that guff. I didn’t know I was even in the running. I applied ages ago to be closer to dad before we lost him, but now they’ve just rung me.”

As she prepared to leave the village, Todd acknowledged that her relationship with Vanessa was most likely going to be temporary, before agreeing that they’d be better off as friends.

Charity is set to face a devastating trauma (Image: ITV)

Todd’s exit announcement comes just days before her torment over Charity reaches a harrowing peak. A new issue-based plot will see Charity left devastated when she’s sexually assaulted by Dr Todd. The heartbreaking new storyline will begin on Sunday, June 7.

Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, explained: “This has been one of the most demanding and significant storylines I’ve had to navigate as Charity. We know her as a tough, resilient character, but this trauma will expose a deep, raw vulnerability that has been heartbreaking to play at times.

“I hope this storyline gives even one person the courage to speak out or helps others understand the quiet devastation of trauma.”

Show producer Sophie Roper added: “Charity’s storyline will explore the impact of sexual violence, and though this heinous act is fundamentally about power, we’ll explore the complexities of how Charity processes her trauma when the perpetrator is a woman.”

Emmerdale airs weekday nights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
