Beyond Paradise’s Sally Bretton’s real name uncovered
BBC fans have seen Sally Bretton play Martha Humphrey in Beyond Paradise since it began back in 2023.

Actress Sally Bretton is best known for playing Martha Lloyd in the BBC crime drama. She first made her debut in the Death in Paradise world back in 2016 when she appeared in the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie, before leaving with Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) in 2017.
Since then, viewers were thrilled when the duo got their own spin-off show, Beyond Paradise, following their lives in Devon as Humphrey joined the local police in Shipton Abbott solving eccentric crimes. However, fans of the programme may be shocked to discover that Sally Bretton isn’t her real name. The actress was born as Sally Davis, before coming up with her stage name, which she’s better known by.
Speaking to The Telegraph back in 2015, she explained the name came to her when she was working at multinational clothing brand, Next.

She said: “A friend brought in a book all about the meanings of names, and I was in the staff room flicking through.”
After falling on Bretton, she explained: “I just thought, ‘Yup, I quite like that.’ It’s totally random, but I thought it sounded quite nice.”
It’s reported the actress had to change her name as Sally Davis was already registered with the actors’ union Equity, resulting in her picking the professional name of Bretton.
The current series of Beyond Paradise is coming to an end tonight (May 1) as viewers will discover Humphrey’s fate.
In recent scenes, he was ordered by his boss to let go of a member of the Shipton Abbott police force to save money, however, it seems as though the detective has sacrificed himself.
As the series comes to an end, Barbara Flynn, who plays Martha’s mum Anne, has spoken about whether she’d be back for another series.

Speaking to the Express, she commented: “I mean, it is an extraordinary thing. It’s become a kind of habitual thing, because this will be the fifth year if we do go back.
“You know, never say whatever, but we are down there in Cornwall in July. That’s, that’s the fifth summer till almost December, where we go down there till the beginning of December, pretty much.
“It’s a long time, and I mean, we all come and go, Kris not so much. But it’s delightful. It’s such an intelligent, gentle, but not sort of mushy programme with wonderful puzzles that aren’t just fluffy at all, some are actually quite difficult and moving.”
Beyond Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
