‘His Passing Will Not Be Mourned’: Anthony Albanese Backs US–Israel Strikes on Iran

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed support for joint military action taken by the United States and Israel against Iran, declaring that the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei “will not be mourned.”

Speaking from Canberra, the Prime Minister said Australia welcomes efforts aimed at preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and curbing what he described as destabilising actions in the region.

Alleged Links to Attacks on Australian Soil

Albanese referenced alleged Iranian involvement in hostile activity beyond the Middle East, including incidents in Australia.

Among the incidents previously investigated were:

  • A firebombing attack targeting a Jewish-owned deli in Sydney

  • The 2024 attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne

Australian authorities have publicly raised concerns in recent years about foreign interference and extremist-linked activity, including actions connected to Iranian state actors or affiliates.

Backing Allies, Warning of Escalation

While welcoming US–Israel strikes, the government has also maintained concern about regional escalation and the protection of civilians.

Australia is not directly involved in the military operation but has:

  • Upgraded travel advice across several Middle Eastern countries

  • Activated DFAT’s crisis response mechanisms

  • Urged Australians in affected areas to leave if safe

A Shift in Tone

The Prime Minister’s statement that Khamenei’s passing “will not be mourned” marks some of his strongest language to date on the Iranian regime.

It follows bipartisan parliamentary condemnation of Iran’s leadership and acknowledgment of the regime’s human rights record and regional activities.

What Happens Next?

With tensions still high, Australia’s position appears to balance:

  • Support for allies’ security objectives

  • Opposition to Iran’s authoritarian regime

  • Caution about broader regional instability

As events continue to unfold, the focus remains on containing escalation — and ensuring the safety of Australians in the region.
