A former Emmerdale star has joined rival soap Coronation Street, almost three decades after leaving TV.

In recent episodes of the ITV soap, Sally (Sally Dynevor) and Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) have been caring for Mick (Joe Layton) and Lou Michaelis’ (Farrel Hegarty) youngsters following their shock arrests.

However, last week witnessed the children receiving heartbreaking news during an assessment with a social worker and psychologist.

Despite an initially promising meeting, concerns arose when Shanice emerged from the garden sporting a bloody wound on her leg, claiming her elder sister Joanie had caused the injury.

Tim and Sally tried to minimise Joanie’s actions, yet the professionals remained unconvinced, reports the Daily Star.

Subsequently, the social worker returned with devastating news that the sisters would be separated. Nevertheless, amid all the on-screen turmoil, Coronation Street enthusiasts couldn’t shake the feeling they’d seen the social worker actress elsewhere.

On a Corrie Facebook fan page, one viewer posted: “It’s driving me mad trying to think who the actress is playing the psychologist at Tim and Sally’s on tonight’s episode. I’m sure she’s been on Corrie before but not 100%”.

Fellow watchers quickly identified the actress as former Emmerdale star Glenda McKay, who portrayed Rachel Hughes, Joe Tate’s mother. “She’s from Emmerdale,” a second fan clarified.

A third chimed in: “Emmerdale. She played Rachel, Joe Tate’s Mum.” Another viewer exclaimed: “It was bugging me as well! Can put a name to the face now!”.

Actress Glenda first graced Emmerdale in 1988 as Rachel and remained a fixture until her character met her end in 1999. Post-Emmerdale, Glenda took a hiatus from acting but recently made a triumphant return in last week’s episode of Coronation Street.

Reflecting on her departure from Emmerdale, Glenda remarked: “I’ve been at Emmerdale for 11 years so it is a big change, but there comes a time when you have to go. I have other strings to my bow, and now seems like the right time to put them to the test.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
