DEATH IN PARADISE REPLACEMENT SHOCK: BBC Hands Friday Night to a Former Saint Marie Detective — But the Biggest Twist Comes Next!

🚨 DEATH IN PARADISE REPLACEMENT SHOCK: BBC Hands Friday Night to a Former Saint Marie Detective — But the Biggest Twist Comes Next!

Death in Paradise fans faced a major BBC schedule shake-up when the Caribbean crime drama disappeared from its familiar Friday-night slot after its series finale.

The final episode aired on Friday, 28 March 2025, bringing DI Mervin Wilson’s first full investigation on Saint Marie to an emotional conclusion. One week later, viewers tuning in at the usual time found an entirely different BBC One line-up waiting for them.

From Friday, 4 April, Have I Got News for You occupied the 9pm slot, followed at 9.30pm by the comedy-drama Austin.

Death In Paradise has been replaced on the BBC schedule in a major shakeup.

But the BBC had one unexpected surprise for long-term Death in Paradise fans: Austin stars Ben Miller, the actor who played the programme’s original detective, DI Richard Poole.

It meant that although viewers were temporarily leaving Saint Marie behind, one of its most unforgettable former detectives was returning to Friday-night television almost immediately—just in a completely different role.

The Paradise franchise didn’t disappear completely

Fans were not left entirely without their weekly dose of sun-soaked mysteries.

Beyond Paradise, starring Kris Marshall as former Saint Marie detective Humphrey Goodman, continued airing on Fridays at 8pm. The spin-off follows Humphrey and Martha Lloyd’s new life in Shipton Abbott while Humphrey investigates a string of increasingly unusual crimes.

Austin will star actor Ben Miller, who played DI Richard Poole in Death in Paradise

The arrangement created a curious BBC schedule: viewers could begin the evening with a member of the wider Paradise family before watching Ben Miller return in Austin later that night.

Despite alarming suggestions that Death in Paradise had been “dropped,” the change represented the end of its scheduled series run—not the permanent cancellation of the programme.

Mervin and Selwyn left fans demanding answers

Don Gilet made his first appearance as DI Mervin Wilson in the 2024 Christmas special before taking charge of his first complete series.

The team are seen discussing the Commissioner's exit

His arrival marked another major transformation for the programme following Ralf Little’s departure as DI Neville Parker. But Mervin quickly won over viewers as his investigation into the mysterious death of his birth mother became increasingly personal.

The storyline also placed him in conflict with Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington. Selwyn initially attempted to stop Mervin’s investigation, creating suspicion about what he knew and why he was so determined to interfere.

Meanwhile, Selwyn faced his own crisis after receiving devastating news about his position. His efforts to persuade his superiors to reverse their decision exposed a more vulnerable side of the normally controlled Commissioner.

The prospect of Selwyn leaving Saint Marie—and his subsequent trip to Jamaica—left viewers wondering whether one of the programme’s last original characters was preparing to say goodbye.

The BBC has now revealed the show’s real future

When the original schedule change was announced, a fifteenth series had not yet been formally confirmed. Don Gilet nevertheless hinted that the cast would return to Guadeloupe at the end of April.

That uncertainty has now been completely resolved.

Series 15 premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Friday, 30 January 2026. Red Planet Pictures subsequently confirmed that the BBC has commissioned another two series and two additional Christmas specials.

Filming for Series 16 is already underway in Guadeloupe, with Don Gilet, Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Shaquille Ali-Yebuah, Catherine Garton and Élizabeth Bourgine all confirmed to return.

Executive producer Tim Key has also teased that the next Christmas special will introduce a “big surprise” leading directly into Series 16—suggesting that another major change could be approaching Saint Marie. An exact broadcast date has not yet been announced. Official production announcement

Therefore, the replacement of Death in Paradise was never the final goodbye viewers feared. The programme will return for Series 16 and Series 17—but the secret being prepared for its next chapter could change Saint Marie in a way nobody expects.
