Cain Dingle’s devastating diagnosis on Emmerdale on Wednesday left fans “broken”, as some wondered if he was leaving the show.

Jeff Hordley’s character was alone as he was told by his consultant that he had aggressive, but localised, prostate cancer. In a specially formatted episode, the world around him was out of focus, as the scenes put Cain centre stage.

We heard his inner thoughts as he struggled to process what the doctor was telling him, before he fled the hospital. Cain was shown lashing out at people back in the village, determined to face his demons on his own.

Amid his wife Moira Dingle being charged with murder, Cain kept his diagnosis from her and others. Instead, Cain visited his late father Zak Dingle’s grave and confided in him.

But he wasn’t alone, and soon the camera panned out to reveal his granddaughter Sarah Sugden was by his side, Sarah broke down as she supported her grandfather, with Sarah herself having been diagnosed with cancer more than once since she was a child.

In heartbreaking scenes, Sarah told Cain he didn’t need to deal with this alone anymore and she would be there for him. Encouraging him to open up, she sat with him as he told her he had been diagnosed with cancer, and that he was scared.

Fans were left in floods of tears over the episode, as Cain asked Sarah if she had been scared too when she was diagnosed, before the pair hugged it out. Viewers praised the episode and the performances, with many confessing it was a tough watch.
