ITV soap Emmerdale is preparing to shine a light on hidden homelessness through a much-loved character.
Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah) is currently without a home, sleeping in a vehicle and barns. He is holding down a job, well-liked by those around him, and has recently embarked on a new romance.
His predicament will gradually come to light as forthcoming episodes unfold. Once Kammy’s circumstances become known, the villagers will thankfully come together to support him. The soap has been collaborating with charities including The Salvation Army to authentically portray this storyline.
Producer Sophie Roper explained: “This storyline is a vital look at ‘hidden homelessness,’ showing that people can be living on the edge of society, sleeping in their vehicle or barns, while still successfully holding down a job and maintaining relationships.
“For many reasons, a person’s circumstances can change dramatically and we wanted to challenge the perception of what homelessness looks like and prove that what people present to the outside world isn’t necessarily the whole story.
“We hope this narrative encourages our viewers to look closer and remember that things are not always quite as they seem.”

Next week, Kammy pays a visit to Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper) at her workplace and uses Eid as a pretext to enquire about Kammy’s family. Upon noticing that the subject makes him uneasy, she fears she may have crossed a line.
Kammy is forced to dash off when Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) texts him about another blaze. Noticing how on edge Robert Sugden (Ryan Haelwy) is about the arsonist, Aaron suggests he takes a breather.
As the pair make their way to the pub, neither spots a mysterious figure lurking in the shadows of the barn. Back at the garage, tensions remain fraught as Aaron clocks how exhausted Kammy appears, while Robert grows increasingly agitated over the arsonist situation.

Kammy becomes uncomfortable when Belle asks about meeting his family again. His curt response to brush off the idea leaves Belle visibly shaken. Before long, Belle finds herself tempted to snoop through Kammy’s phone and is horrified by her own impulse.
She confides in Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) that she can scarcely believe she nearly violated his privacy, yet still senses he is hiding something from her. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to them both, Kammy quietly sets himself up for the night in a barn on Emmerdale Farm.

A rolled-out sleeping bag reveals the shocking truth — Kammy is homeless. When Robert and Aaron stumble upon him in a field clutching a petrol can and lighter, they immediately jump to the conclusion that he is the arsonist.
A furious Robert grabs him by the jacket, and a distraught Kammy confesses he had been planning to set his own car alight.
As Aaron fears Robert is overstepping the mark and steps in, Kammy seizes the moment and flees. Following yet another fire, Aaron reaches breaking point and contacts the police, leaving Kammy driven away in a patrol car.
