EastEnders icon Mark Fowler remains one of the BBC soap’s most memorable characters.

 

Brought to life by Todd Carty, 62, the offspring of Pauline (Wendy Richard) and Arthur Fowler (Bill Treacher) found himself at the centre of Albert Square’s most gripping storylines.

 

Todd first graced our screens in EastEnders back in 1990, departing in 2003 when Mark, following his HIV diagnosis, made his final exit aboard his beloved motorbike. Heartbreakingly, just a year later, the character lost his battle to an AIDS-related strain of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

 

Fast-forward more than twenty years, and Mark’s nephew, Mark Fowler Junior (Stephen Aaron-Sipple), is poised to arrive in Walford in highly anticipated scenes. But what became of the original actor?

From switching to a competing soap to dramatically walking away from a reality programme after merely two episodes, let’s explore….

 

Todd Carty switches to competing soap

Following his EastEnders departure, Todd went on to embody PC Gabriel Kent in ITV’s The Bill between 2003 and 2005. He subsequently featured in various programmes, such as Heartbeat and Holby City, reports the Mirror.

Come 2007, the performer traded Walford for Selly Oak, making his directorial bow on Doctors. Following extensive preparation, Todd helmed three episodes that broadcast on 9th, 10th and 11th July.

Celebrating the opportunity, he remarked: “I really enjoyed my directorial debut on Doctors and could not have done it without a fantastic production team and, of course, every single member of the cast and crew.”

Grange Hill appearance In 2003, Todd returned to the role of Tucker Jenkins in Grange Hill, this time as the uncle of pupil Patrick ‘Togger’ Johnson.

His appearance lasted just one episode, but he was invited back once more for the legendary school drama’s concluding series in 2008 – a special one-off episode marking the 30th anniversary of the enduring BBC programme.

 

Dancing on Ice catastrophe

Beyond acting, Todd dabbled in reality television. His memorable stint on Dancing on Ice in 2009 remains a highlight, featuring an incredible tumble that left his partner, Susie Lipanova, utterly stunned.

Despite receiving terrible scores, viewer support propelled Todd into the following round and was hailed as one of the most hilarious television moments ever filmed. He was eventually eliminated in the 5th round.

 

Abruptly abandons reality TV programme

Todd attempted reality TV once more when he joined Celebrity 5 Go Caravanning. Teaming up with personalities including Sonia and Corrie’s Sherrie Hewson in 2018, he was meant to tour the nation alongside them.

Nevertheless, he departed after merely two episodes with a source revealing to the Metro: “After filming two episodes, Todd decided that the caravanning life was not for him, so he left his companions to continue their adventure.”

Todd’s position on the programme was filled by former Coronation Street star Brian Capron, who portrayed the ITV soap’s infamous serial murderer.

Almost unrecognisable sporting Tom Selleck-style moustache Soap legend Todd was almost unrecognisable as he flaunted a moustache at The Lowry Theatre in Manchester in 2024.

The actor was seen running errands near The Lowry Theatre in the city where he was performing in a touring production of Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap.

Todd appeared completely different from his characters in The Bill and EastEnders, wearing a NY Yankees baseball cap, dark denim jeans, and impressive facial hair.
