Tyler Perry’s House of Payne | Season 14 Episode 17 Review: A Chicken Dinner – A Midseason Finale That Exposed Calvin

**House of Payne Review: Season 14, Episode 17 – “A Chicken Dinner”

Rating: 8/10 | A Midseason Finale That Exposed Calvin**

Alright, House of Payne fans. Hope everyone’s doing well.

As far as we can tell, this appears to be the midseason finale. There’s no new episode next week, and if the show follows last year’s pattern, we’re likely looking at a December break with a return around March. There are still about five episodes left this season, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

That said — A Chicken Dinner gets a solid 8 out of 10 from me.

And once again, low-key?
👉 The B-plot was more interesting than the Calvin storyline.

Let’s break it all down.

The Title: “A Chicken Dinner” (Yes, It’s Literal… and Symbolic)

Turns out the title applies to both main storylines — because both Jasmine and Calvin cooked baked chicken.

Didn’t even catch that until halfway through the episode.

Plot A (For Me): Jasmine & Jackson — The Surprise Standout

We start at CJ and Janine’s house, where Malik is being interviewed by Jasmine’s class group following Glow’s HOA re-election win.

This scene worked really well.

  • Great continuity

  • Jackson absolutely shines in his element

  • Smart, thoughtful questions

  • Clear growth from Malik

I continue to love this more mature, professional version of Malik. He’s still Malik — but evolved.

Once the interview wraps, we get some light sibling teasing between Jasmine and Malik, then the classmates leave… and we’re left with Jasmine and Jackson alone.

The “Date” Setup (a.k.a. the Sneak Peek Scene)

As Jackson heads out, he asks if Jasmine thought about his dinner invite.

She accepts — on one condition:

  • She’s not leaving the house

  • She’ll cook

  • Dinner happens there

Let’s be honest — this screams:

“We don’t have another set.”

Still, the scene works.

CJ Steals the Scene

Later, Jackson arrives with flowers — and CJ is very much not upstairs like planned.

Instead, he:

  • comes into the kitchen

  • pretends he just wants a snack

  • absolutely trolls Jackson

This felt like classic Curtis Payne energy, and honestly?
👉 This is what I thought the reboot would be more like.

CJ teasing Jasmine about her “three dishes,” predicting chicken, and Jackson politely answering everything like his life depends on it? Perfect.

No over-the-top threats.
No awkward dad cliché.
Just playful intimidation.

Jasmine cooks baked chicken, cornbread, and sides, and Jackson’s smoothest line of the episode lands perfectly:

“You wouldn’t accept my invite and volunteer to cook unless you knew what you were doing.”

Simple. Effective. Charming.

And yes — CJ pops back in:

“Told you it’d be chicken.”

This plot worked. Period.

Now… The Calvin Problem

Let’s talk about the main plot.

Because wow.

Low-key?
👉 Calvin was the toxic one this episode.

And this episode confirmed a lot of what fans have been saying for a long time.

Calvin Alone With His Thoughts (Never a Good Sign)

Calvin has the condo to himself — kids are with their moms — and he claims he just wants peace and time to think.

Enter Pookie and Peanut, who immediately recognize:

“Thinking is dangerous for you.”

They’re not wrong.

When they lay out Calvin’s romantic history — two baby mamas, an ex-wife, and an ex-fiancée — it’s funny… but also revealing.

Then Calvin drops this line:

“I’m happiest when I’m married. When I’m building a family.”

And I’m sorry — that’s nonsense.

Calvin doesn’t want marriage.
👉 He wants the feeling of marriage.

He’s chasing familiarity, not growth.

That explains everything.

The Laura Pivot (And Why It’s Messed Up)

Calvin admits he’s been thinking about Laura — right after finding out Miranda is seeing someone.

So let me ask the obvious question:

👉 If Miranda weren’t seeing anyone…
👉 If she’d accepted Calvin’s invite…
👉 Would Laura even be on his radar?

Exactly.

Laura doesn’t deserve to be Plan B just because Calvin can’t stand being alone.

Ella vs. Curtis: A Rare Role Reversal

When CJ tells Curtis and Ella what Calvin’s been up to, Curtis takes the mature stance:

“He needs time. He needs to focus on himself and his kids.”

Ella?

“That girl don’t make him happy.”

Brutal. Honest. Very Ella.

And weirdly enough, Curtis ends up being the more level-headed one when it comes to Calvin’s love life.

Calvin Invites Laura Over (Predictably)

CJ called it.
Calvin invites Laura to dinner.

Extra wine pour.
Seduction mode activated.

He cooks baked chicken, rice, and beans (yes, via YouTube tutorial — which is completely normal in 2025, by the way).

Laura admits she debated even coming — and when they finally talk, everything Calvin says proves the problem.

He apologizes — but doesn’t really listen.

Laura explains she never felt heard.
Calvin calls her a drama queen.

That tells you everything.

“Do You Love Me Enough to Put in the Work?”

Calvin asks this — and I had to pause.

Calvin…
👉 When have YOU put in the work?

When conflict arose:

  • he stepped back

  • avoided involvement

  • ignored red flags

Sex was never the issue.
Listening was.

And instead of addressing real problems — Miranda, his parents, boundaries — Calvin just wants to patch things up with duct tape and hope it holds.

The Ending: Perfect Timing, Maximum Awkwardness

Just as things get heated — knock at the door.

It’s Curtis and Ella.

Ella praises Calvin for “not making rash decisions”…
right before Laura walks out of the back room.

Boom.
Episode ends.

Honestly?
I wish Laura had stayed hidden just a little longer — because Ella was this close to letting it all fly.
