Documents show his estate was worth £485,000, once costs and debts were cleared.

He joined the soap in 1994 as car dealer Roy who wed Pat Butcher in 1996.

The pair’s storylines included Roy’s experimentation with Viagra.

His son Barry was played by Shaun Williamson.

In 2003, Roy died of a heart attack, with Tony furious at bosses for leaving the character no chance of a comeback.

Tony also featured as Jack Shepherd in 1970s sitcom Queenie’s Castle, in Doctor Who and Boon.

EastEnders said: “Tony will forever be loved and respected by everyone on the show for his warmth, kindness and humour.”

Williamson said: “He was like a second father to me and taught me so much about acting and life.

“A great actor and a great man. I will miss him so much.”

Dean Gaffney, who played Robbie Jackson, branded Caunter a “legend”.

Lucy Speed, who played Roy’s daughter-in-law Natalie Evans, added that he was “gentle, kind and classy”.
