Emmerdale actress Emma Atkins fears there might not be “any coming back” for Charity Dingle as she plunges into a “dark” storyline. As fans will remember, Charity recently agreed to become Sarah Sugden’s surrogate following her hysterectomy.

Sadly, Charity’s husband Mackenzie Boyd found it difficult to back her choice after she revealed she didn’t fancy carrying another child. Panic struck when Charity tumbled in the woodland and began bleeding, and whilst she was convinced the pregnancy had ended, Charity was left stunned when medical staff confirmed she was indeed expecting.

But a recent instalment revealed that Charity had enjoyed a passionate encounter with Ross Barton – played by actor Mike Parr, who has just become a dad himself. Now that Mack has returned from his ordeal of being held prisoner by John Sugden, Charity has been wrestling with guilt over her betrayal.

Ross has insisted on a paternity test, leaving Charity petrified that the baby might not belong to Sarah.

In forthcoming scenes, bowing to pressure from Ross, Charity secretly pursues the outcome of her paternity test.

She feels awful witnessing how thrilled Sarah and Jacob are about their upcoming bundle of joy.

Charity’s remorse deepens when Mack organises an impromptu romantic evening.

Subsequently, Chas grows suspicious after discovering Charity looking deeply troubled at the Woolpack. Chas is left reeling when Charity drops the bombshell that the baby she’s expecting for Sarah and Jacob is actually hers and Ross’s.

Realising this revelation could shatter both her bond with Sarah and her marriage, Charity finds herself unable to confess the truth to anyone else.

Chas urges her to come clean sooner rather than later.

Facing the dilemma alone, Charity makes the decision to arrange a termination.

Meanwhile, Sarah is over the moon when a letter arrives confirming their scan appointment.

Charity appears uncomfortable, secretly having already booked her termination.

Chas attempts to reason with Charity, insisting a termination isn’t the solution, leading to a heated row.

Later, Charity is found weeping in her vehicle.

Sarah unknowingly makes the situation more painful when she presents Charity with a keepsake box, explaining that she and Jacob have begun gathering mementos for their future child.

She even proposes that Charity pen a welcome letter to the unborn baby, completely missing how distressing this suggestion is for Charity at this moment.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News and other media outlets, Emma explored the possibility of Charity proceeding with the termination.

She explained: “I feel like to create an even darker scenario where she’s considering a termination for her is impossible, but it’s the only way out to maybe just try and make it go away and bury it once and for all.

“And it’s such an immoral thing that she’s considering doing, but she just feels it’s her only option at this point.”

Reflecting on how this situation echoes Mack’s past actions with Chloe, Emma went on: “In some ways, Charity would have a good argument. She would have something in her arsenal that she would say, actually, you’re gonna have to forgive me because of what you did to me.

“However, life isn’t like that, is it? And I don’t know whether there is any coming back from this, but, again, it’ll be good TV because it will simmer for a while.

“Secrets and lies do have a way of coming out, one way or another.”
