🎾💍 GAME, SET… MARRIED! Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter secretly wed during Wimbledon final — but the date sparked one brutal question

Alex de Minaur has found something worth celebrating after his painful Wimbledon exit, quietly marrying fellow tennis star Katie Boulter in an intimate ceremony attended by only their closest family members.

But while congratulations poured in for the newlyweds, the timing of their wedding immediately triggered an unexpected debate among tennis fans.

A private wedding away from the spotlight

De Minaur, 27, and Boulter, 29, exchanged vows on Sunday, July 12, at a church near Boulter’s family home in Leicestershire.

The ceremony was deliberately kept personal, with only a small group of relatives reportedly invited. Local residents were also asked to keep the couple’s plans secret.

Boulter wore an elegant white off-the-shoulder gown and carried a small bouquet, while De Minaur chose a traditional black suit and bow tie. Breaking with convention, the couple reportedly arrived together in a black Porsche Carrera before celebrating with their family at a local pub. People

One detail had fans talking

The wedding took place while Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev were contesting the Wimbledon men’s final.

That unusual scheduling choice quickly became a major talking point online. Some fans questioned why a top-five player would arrange his wedding on the day he could theoretically have been competing for one of tennis’s greatest prizes.

“World No. 5 ranked player planning their wedding for the day of the Wimbledon final… the ATP is absolutely cooked,” one person wrote.

Another claimed the date suggested De Minaur did not truly believe he could reach the championship match, while others joked that both he and Boulter apparently knew they would be available.

However, wedding dates are frequently organised well in advance and can be difficult to change. The online criticism also ignored the fact that professional tennis players spend most of the year travelling, leaving couples with very few opportunities to gather their families in one place.

Fans rush to defend the couple

Many supporters quickly condemned the negative comments, arguing that the wedding should be celebrated as a private and deeply personal milestone rather than analysed as a statement about De Minaur’s ambition.

“Congrats to both! Shame on the haters — this is not about tennis, this is about celebrating their union and love,” one fan responded.

Another said it was simply wonderful to see De Minaur smiling again after the emotional pain he had experienced on court.

The Australian had been visibly devastated after losing to Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon fourth round. Cobolli defeated him 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3, extending De Minaur’s wait for a first Grand Slam semifinal. ATP Tour

Following the defeat, De Minaur admitted that repeatedly falling short of his biggest goals was leaving him feeling “broken inside”. Just six days later, however, he was standing beside Boulter and beginning a completely different chapter of his life.

From Wimbledon heartbreak to career-high ranking

The wedding was followed by another reason to celebrate. On Monday, De Minaur climbed to a career-best world No. 5 in the ATP rankings.

He became the first Australian man in 17 years to reach the top five, joining an illustrious group that includes Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, John Newcombe, Pat Cash, Pat Rafter and Lleyton Hewitt.

It was a striking contrast: while some critics used the wedding date to question his belief, the official rankings confirmed that De Minaur had never been closer to the very top of men’s tennis.

For now, however, trophies and rankings can wait. After six years together and an engagement announced in December 2024, De Minaur and Boulter finally had their perfect match — even if it arrived on the most controversial date imaginable.
