Emmerdale’s Bob Hope actor has a real-life story even more extraordinary than some of the soap’s most dramatic plotlines. Tony Audenshaw rose to prominence portraying beloved Bob on the ITV soap back in 2000 – and since his debut he’s been featured in countless unforgettable soap scenes. These include Bob hitting rock bottom after being left practically bankrupt and forced to sleep on a park bench in a hypothermic state, the death of his teenage son Heath (Sebastian Dowling) in a fatal car crash and his many romances in the famous village.

And for actor Tony, like his Emmerdale alter-ego, life hasn’t always been straightforward for the talented star. He has faced difficult periods struggling financially while pursuing his ambition of acting, and also suffered the loss of his wife, reports the Mirror. Here, we’re taking a look inside the life of Bob actor Tony.

Tony’s real-life homelessness ordeal

Back in 2019, Tony spoke candidly about experiencing homelessness, explaining that couldn’t afford accommodation in a BnB while working at Thorpe Park during the 1980s, so was forced to sleep in his vehicle to survive.

“There were occasions where I didn’t have enough for a BandB, so I just parked up and tried to get some kip. It wasn’t easy, but you do what you have to do,” he said on Loose Women.

Tony went to reveal that he used to work at the populae theme park as a ranger and that he almost spent one week cramped in his four-wheeler instead of paying for a BnB because he “didn’t have money coming in”.

Tony’s wife’s cancer death

In April 2017, Tony’s wife Ruth sadly died from pancreatic cancer when she was 43 years old, after a 16-month battle with the disease. Tony and Ruth had been married since 1996 and had two children together, a son George and a daughter Emily.

Speaking to The Mirror, Tony recalled the moment Ruth was told she had months to live after a hospital visit. He said: “I remember being very quiet as we walked to the hospital car park, then breaking down in the car. Before we worried about forgetting to put the bin out. Now Ruth was going to be dead within a year after a horrible illness.”

Tony also spoke about when he and Ruth broke the news to their children George and Em. He said: “We spent loads of time together and that made us even closer as a family. I don’t know where I’d have been over the last year without the kids. It’s unbearable to think about it.”

Tony’s wife’s final message

Last year, avid runner Tony shared that he will be running the London Marathon in support of the event’s charity, Pancreatic Cancer UK. And according to the soap star, she left a message asking him to run for the charity if he ever did the London Marathon again.

Tony has run the London Marathon several times over the years, but when Ruth was first diagnosed with the disease in 2015 though, he stopped taking part. He previously shared: “She left all her friends and family a card to read after she died, and in it she said ‘if you run London again will you do it for pancreatic cancer?’ She also then added something like ‘no pressure, if you don’t fancy it don’t’ – which is very Ruth.”

In 2025, Tony revealed his plans to run the London Marathon again, with the event taking place on what would have been the couple’s 24th wedding anniversary. Whilst chatting to Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show, he shared that he would be “doing it in Ruth’s memory” and raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK is especially vital as he added: “We’re on the cusp of something… Looking at a breathe test that can detect cancer early”.

Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX
