Emmerdale fans are certain they know exactly what happened in newcomer Serena Sugden’s past after one “telling” scene with Kev Townsend. Serena has come into the ITV village as the estranged second cousin of Robert and Victoria Sugden, but fans have been suspicious about her ulterior motive ever since she introduced herself.

Now, after a chat with Robert’s ex-husband Kev – who he met in prison – fans are convinced Serena knows more about Emmerdale and Robert than she’s letting on. In tonight’s episode (July 2) Serena was working behind the bar at the Woolpack while Kev was drinking a pint with Mack.

Kev told her: “I’ve worked out where I know you from. You were a screw, weren’t you?”

Kev seemed to waver, insisting he “knows her from somewhere”, before Serena warned him to back off. But fans are sure they’ve spotted another connection.

Some have suggested that rather than being a prison officer, Serena might have worked as a counsellor in prison after Kev admitted to having therapy while he was behind bars. On X, one user tweeted: “I think it was obvious to every man and his dog that he knew her from prison. He was banged up for 23 years, can only have been that. A screw? A counsellor? I don’t know but she didn’t want to chat about it.”

Another said: “Out there Serena theory no 2. What if she was a prison shrink but got sacked for a relationship with an inmate. She’s now researching John to write a scientific paper and restore her professional reputation.”

While a third echoed: “Dying to know where Kev knows Serena from…has to be prison but maybe a counsellor rather than a guard? She seems to know how to talk to and listen to people.”
