Ardal O’Hanlon, star of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ in Paradise, left Sunday Brunch hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer dumbfounded when he revealed his peculiar hobby.

The television icon graced this week’s episode of the popular Channel 4 programme (1st February), alongside fellow guests Louise Thompson, Seann Walsh, and Fury from Gladiators.

The Irish comedian and actor is renowned for his portrayal of Father Dougal McGuire in the classic sitcom Father Ted, as well as his role as DI Jack Mooney on the BBC’s sun-drenched detective series from 2017-2020.

During the initial conversation, Ardal stunned the hosts and panel by confessing that he collects beard trimmings. A sceptical Tim confessed “I’m not sure I believe it” as he questioned Ardal, who clarified: “My own beard trimmings!”

“You don’t hang out in barbers then, no?” Tim queried, to which Ardal responded: “I genuinely do, I collect my beard trimmings.”

“I don’t know if other people do this,” he said. “I possibly have the biggest collection of beard trimmings in the world.”

Still puzzled, Tim and Simon exclaimed “Why?!” and Ardal explained: “Well, it started… I was doing a play a number of years ago and I had this huge bushy beard.

“I’m not that manly, it took me a long time to grow it, and I felt it would be an awful waste when I finished the play to just discard the filings. So I kept it in a little vial and I labelled it, this reminded me of my character in the play.

“And since then, when I have a decent beard… it seems like such a waste!”

Ardal’s revelation left his fellow Sunday Brunch guests in hysterics. Comedian Seann offered a tongue-in-cheek idea: “You should use it to stuff pillows!”

Ardal responded enthusiastically: “There’s so many applications! I see in the years to come, when I’m no longer around, my children…”

The panel erupted in laughter as Ardal failed to complete his thoughts about what his offspring might do with the peculiar collection.
Eventually, Tim pictured his children discovering the bizarre stash and branding him a “psychopath” before quickly transitioning to the next topic.

“That’s amazing,” an out-of-breath Simon remarked, before returning his attention to the lentil salad he was making.

Sunday Brunch airs from 10am on Channel 4.
