A Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise star has made a shock return to the BBC show following a sad exit. Beyond Paradise documents the life of DI Humphrey Goodman, who now runs the Shipton Abbot police station.

Humphrey was a popular detective in the Caribbean, but was eventually replaced when he decided to return home to London. Later, he decided to connect with his now-partner Martha and they live together in Devon.

The pair had been struggling to tie the knot for months as it never worked out how they hoped. As a result, Martha decided the only way she could make it work was to surprise him with a wedding.

With Humphrey left shocked by Martha’s shock gesture, she told him he needed to change. In a poignant moment, she said: “I nearly forgot – I found you a best man too,” as the camera panned to Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

“Nice of you to join us Inspector Goodman,” he said, as he handed over his suit. It marks a return to the series for Selwyn after he decided to leave Saint Marie behind and travel the world.

During the final episode of the last series of Dᴇᴀᴛʜ In Paradise, the team were dealt another difficult case to deal with. Selwyn was distracted by the arrival of his replacement, Sterling Fox.

“I’ve only been on this island five minutes and I’ve already fallen in love with it. I know I’m going to have the best time working here,” Sterling said, with the rest of the team devastated to see their boss replaced.

“This is a great honour too. Getting to meet the great Commissioner Patterson. Back in HQ in Jamaica, they say you’re a total living legend,” Sterling added, before Selwyn fired back: “Makes you wonder why they’re getting rid of me.”

Later, Selwyn decided that whilst he was offered his job back, he wouldn’t be staying. Catherine Bordey was horrified by Selwyn’s decision. She said: “50 years of service to this island and now you can just walk away? Not care anymore?

“Is that really how you want this all to end? By turning your back on everything you used to stand for? Selwyn, Mervin came to Saint Marie looking for answers, if he has to leave without finding them, then this island has let him down.”

Sterling told Mervin that he had planned to discuss the ‘arrest’ with the Chief Commissioner when he returned back to Jamaica. However, Mervin was not impressed and said: “With respect Mr Fox, I’d like to point out that if we did things your way a man guilty of murder would be walking free right now. Which I’m sure the Chief Commissioner would be very interested to hear.”

He then told his boss: “When you go back to Jamaica, you tell your boss that to avoid any more mistakes like this being made by your good self, he needs to reinstate the commissioner.”

Could this hint at a return for Commissioner Selwyn Patterson for good?
