Tyler Perry’s House of Payne | Season 14 Episode 10 Review: Protector in Chief
🎬 House of Payne Season 14, Episode 10 — “Protector and Chief” (Midseason Finale) Review
Hey folks, hope you’re all doing well — and happy early 4th of July to those who celebrate!
We just wrapped up the midseason finale of House of Payne Season 14, Episode 10, titled “Protector and Chief”. Overall? A solid, emotional episode — I’d rate it 9/10. The main story was strong, but the Laura subplot felt out of place and brought the episode down just a notch.
🔷 The Good: Family, Crisis & Heart
This was House of Payne at its best — showing how the family comes together in a crisis. The school shooting storyline was handled respectfully and gave CJ a chance to shine as a leader and protector. Seeing him at a press conference, being called a hero, and even referencing his bravery in the fire from Season 9 was a great callback.
The whole family — Malik, Jasmine, Janine, Ella, Curtis — rallied together, praying and supporting each other as news came in. And the dialogue about the trauma first responders face was a heartfelt touch. Kudos to the writers for weaving in a meaningful PSA about gun violence and safety.
Lisa also got some much-needed depth as she worried about her friend Terry at the college. It was a good opportunity to show her emotional side and how much she and Malik really care about each other despite their bickering.
🔷 The Bad: Laura & Her Dad
On the flip side, the Laura subplot felt… unnecessary here. Her scenes with her dad — while acted well — seemed tonally disconnected from the main story. They undercut the supposed truce she had with Miranda and made her seem like a victim yet again. I wish they’d used that time to develop Lisa more, especially since her friend was involved in the college shooting.
Honestly, it felt like filler — and in an otherwise strong, emotional episode, it didn’t belong.
🔷 Final Thoughts
I love episodes like this that really showcase the Paynes as a family: flawed, but strong, supportive, and always there for each other. CJ’s heroism, Janine’s comforting presence, Ella’s prayers — it all worked beautifully.
Laura’s drama? Not so much. Hopefully her storyline gets more balanced in the second half of the season.
🔷 What’s Next?
Sistas returns July 16 and will likely run until late September. My guess is House of Payne will return in October to finish out the year.
I’ll also have my Divorce Sisters review up soon — probably over the holiday weekend — and plenty more content on my channels (Beyond the Gates and here). So stay tuned, subscribe, and don’t miss out!
Have a safe and happy 4th of July, everyone — and thanks for watching and supporting the channel!
