9 massive Emmerdale spoilers as boss teases ‘huge story’, major character comeback and Killing off a villain

An Emmerdale boss has teased fans with some upcoming spoilers from the ITV soap – following the death of a villain and a major comeback planned.

Setting the scene, Emmerdale spoilers tease Charity and Sarah are still working hard to maintain their lie about the circumstances of Todd’s demise.

When Bear talks to Sarah about the anguish killing Todd will be causing Charity, he doesn’t know he’s accurately describing the feelings of the real killer who’s standing in front of him. The day of Todd’s funeral is causing Sarah’s guilt to spike.

Charity’s attempt to put together a happy family meal is wrecked when DS Ramsden turns up to discuss some anomalies in her statement about Todd. After DS Ramsden escorts Charity down to the station, a stunned silence descends around the table; Sarah’s left wracked with guilt.

In a Police interview room, Charity’s left anxious as the forensics undermine her account of fighting off Todd. Serena’s alarmed to hear that Sarah wants to tell the police everything fearing that emotional Sarah will end up getting her locked up too.

During an Emmerdale press event, producer Sophie Roper has offered fans a hint of what is to come from their favourite soap.

Sarah’s fate

Sophie said: “The story is what this has done to Sarah and the Charity.” She added: “She’s a young woman who is probably at the happiest point in her life. She’s got this brilliant relationship with Jacob and her daughter. And, this one moment, this moment which will change the trajectory of her future in the show irrevocably, she’s really struggling to come to terms with that.

“We are very much with Sarah. She’s a moral character but she’s taken another person’s life. Regardless of what that person has done it doesn’t sit easy with her – that will be a real journey that we follow with her.”

Killing off a villain

Sophie was asked whether the plan was always to kill off doctor Todd when the character returned. Sophie answered: “Any story, like this, stories evolve all the way through that process. When we embark on anything like this, which is such a sensitive subject and such a difficult subject, we were really keen to dramatise the pursuit of justice.

“That formulates the first part of Charity’s journey. We were very keen to see that she went to the police, that she absolutely reported what had happened and we saw what was happened, she was believed, and that a police investigation took place as a result.

“As we know, for so many survivors, they don’t feel that they can report this kind of assault. The difficult reality is that, for the nature of this kind of crime, it can be really difficult to prove and prosecute and we wanted to be truthful to that.

“Unfortunately, for a lot of people, justice, from the criminal stand point, doesn’t happen. Obviously, the story culminates in the death of doctor Todd but that is accidental. I think, for us, as that story plays out on screen, it is really nuanced in its approach.”

‘Huge story’

Sophie has promised Emmerdale fans that the fallout from Todd’s death will be major. She explained: “It will formulate a huge story and we will absolutely see the consequences. Absolutely from a legal standpoint but how Sarah deals with that. For her, she has taken another person’s life and regardless of the heinous crime doctor Todd did. That will be a huge story for doctor Todd to come to terms with as well.”

‘Ultimate betrayal’

Of course, there’s the small matter of the truth about baby Leyla. Sophie said: “It is going to test them (Sarah and Charity). This is the ultimate betrayal. This is a relationship and a dynamic where they are so important in each other’s lives and there’s so much trust, love and respect. I think it will test both of those characters in ways they’ve never seen before.”

Charity and Vanessa

Emmerdale fans have been told of some warm scenes coming between former flames Charity and Vanessa. Sophie explained: “I think that relationship is a really important relationship on the show. Years ago, there was a romantic relationship there. But, I think, we’ve really earned the friendship those two women have.

“I think Vanessa being a support to Charity, in this story, there’s some really powerful material. That’s why we love that friendship and those connections they’ve built in the show.”

What next for Charity?

“Charity has had some journey – over all of her years with us. Emma (Atkins who plays Charity) continues to bring such brilliance to screen. I think the joy of a character like Charity is that she grows. She doesn’t always learn – she’s made some similar mistakes along the years.

“But, she absolutely grows as a person. Emotionally, during this storyline with Sarah, absolutely, although she hasn’t always made the right decisions, they’re all coming from a place of love and that need to protect.

“That need to protect family and, I think, that’s why Charity’s character will be able to go on. There will always be stories for her because she’s such a dynamic individual. She’s driven by love, loyalty and family. We will test her, there will be things she has to overcome, but she is somebody, I think, that there’s so much more I’d love to learn about that character and see her tackle as an actor and character on the show. So, there’s pressure on us to ensure we can still keep finding those dynamic stories for her. It is a challenge but one I think she’ll relish.”

Major comeback

Of course, we have Sadie King, played by Patsy Kensit, back in the village very soon. Talking of Sadie’s return, and possibly doing battle with Charity, Sophie said: “All to come but they will be living in the same village. So, let’s see if those old histories are reignited.”

Sugdens at the heart of Emmerdale

Sophie has praised the addition of new character Serena – played by Casey Al-Shaqsy. Sophie said: “Serena is a really fantastic new character within the show and I think we are absolutely reestablishing our wonderful clans. The Sugdens being a huge part of the show and the rural community that we enjoy and celebrate on the show.

“Obviously, Serena also has a police background, so it was really interesting to include her in this dynamic with Sarah and Charity. It is three incredibly strong women all holding their own in how you deal with the impossible situation. Serena is an incredibly moral character.”

Will Charity and Mack stay together?

Once again, Charity and Mack’s relationship will be pushed to the limit. Discussing where things go, Sophie commented: “It will test them. This is a relationship where Mack is potentially having to respond to bad decisions that his wife has made.

“What I can say is that they are an incredibly strong couple. We will fight for them to find a way through it. For everything Charity has been through, for everything they have done to one-another, it has been a really dramatic marriage and a dramatic relationship and they’ve faced a lot. Where they are at their best is when they unite to overcome things together.

“We’ll test them but it would be great to see them overcome that.”
