Soap enthusiasts are in for a bit of a letdown tonight, as both major soaps have been yanked from the schedule in a massive telly shake-up. It was the same on Thursday night too, with EastEnders and Emmerdale both off-air.

Normally, viewers get to enjoy an hour-long episode of Emmerdale on Thursdays, along with a 30-minute visit to Albert Square with EastEnders. However, on Thursday all soaps were pulled from the airwaves.

It’s also grim news for Coronation Street fans, as although the soap doesn’t typically broadcast on Thursdays, it’ll be off the box tonight (July 4).

EastEnders aficionados got their two-hour fix of the soap earlier this week with a double bill on both Monday and Tuesday. Loads of keen fans hopped onto iPlayer to catch the soap early, while those tuning in at 7pm had to flick over to BBC Two.

The switch is due to a summer packed with sports, with Wimbledon dominating the BBC schedules for a fortnight. But it’s not just tennis elbowing its way in, as the Beeb is also airing coverage of the Women’s Euros as the footie teams duke it out in the group stages, reports the Mirror.

ITV will also be showing a number of Euros matches. On Friday (July 4), they’ll be broadcasting Germany’s clash with Poland, meaning Corrie devotees will have to hold on until next week for their next jaunt to Weatherfield.

Regrettably, EastEnders enthusiasts will have to twiddle their thumbs a bit longer than usual, as the soap won’t be back on the box until next Wednesday. But there’s a silver lining for fans – they’ll be treated to a double helping when Wednesday finally rolls around.

Emmerdale devotees will have one less day to wait, with the soap set to return at 7.30pm next Tuesday (July 8). Corrie followers, however, will have to sit tight an extra day, as the regular Monday and Wednesday episodes are being bumped due to more footie action.

The scheduling reshuffle isn’t the only major shake-up for the ITV soaps. On Monday (June 30), ITV began dropping full episodes of both shows on YouTube at 6am, as well as on ITVX.

The official Coronation Street Instagram page trumpeted: “Soap fans, rejoice!”.

“Starting tomorrow, full episodes will be available on YouTube from 7am – the same day they air on TV!” The announcement was accompanied by a snap showing Emmerdale and Corrie characters striking a pose beneath the logos of their respective soaps.
