Tyler Perry’s House of Payne | Season 14 Episode 9 Review: House of Second Chances

🎥 House of Payne Season 14 Episode 9 REVIEW | Jasmine & Jackson Drama Continues + Curtis & Floyd Make a Smart Move!

Hey House of Payne fans!

I just finished watching Season 14, Episode 9: “House of Second Chances”, and honestly… this was a surprisingly solid episode!

Let me start by saying—this one’s getting a 9/10 from me, and here’s why.

🍗 Curtis & Floyd: Finally Making Smart Business Decisions

First off, the Floyd and Curtis BBQ business subplot didn’t eat up nearly as much screen time as I feared. Thank God for that!

We had like… three short scenes tops.

So the gist: QAnthony (aka Q) shows up again with his shady, greasy car-salesman energy and tries to gas up Curtis while ignoring Floyd. Typical.

He presents them with this massive contract, talking about how signing it will get their sauce business rolling. Of course, Floyd is suspicious—rightfully so.

They go to CJ for advice, who tells them… lawyers ain’t cheap—$1,500 just to get started.

At first, it looked like Curtis and Floyd were going to try to DIY their way through this legalese mess. And Ella—like any good wife—drops that classic “don’t sign anything without reading it” line. But let’s be real… they were already reading it!

But here’s the part I loved:
By the end, both Curtis and Floyd agree to chip in and hire a real lawyer.

Thank you, writers!

For once, these two didn’t spend the entire episode bickering over nonsense.
They actually handled this like adults.

Now, will QAnthony’s shady motives get exposed soon? I hope so. But for now… smart move, Sauce Bosses!

📝 Jasmine & Jackson: Group Project Stress + Mixed Feelings

Now let’s get to the real meat of the episode: Jasmine, Jackson, and their journalism project drama.

Honestly, I still have issues with how the show is handling Jackson’s redemption arc… but credit where it’s due, this storyline had solid writing.

Jasmine’s out here grinding on this project. Her journalism major? She’s all in.

Jackson, on the other hand… typical flake move:
He was supposed to handle the on-camera interviews for the group, but… car trouble strikes again.

Her group partners, Nigel and Megan, try to cut Jackson some slack—but Jasmine ain’t having it.
And honestly… can you blame her?

The guy ghosted the group and didn’t even send the files like he promised.

Then Jackson shows up—with his grandma in tow—and gives the whole explanation:

  • Car wouldn’t start

  • Files too big to send

  • Grandma drove him to the store so he could transfer the interviews

Props to Grandma, though. She really went to bat for her grandson, explaining how he’s been stressed and that he’s doing the best he can.

And yeah… I can’t lie… seeing Jackson that frazzled and willing to fix things?
Kinda humanized him. Even Jasmine was taken aback.

🎓 Realistic College Group Project Energy

One thing I LOVED about this episode?

The way they portrayed the group project stress.

As someone who’s been through those group assignments back in college, this felt real.

When one person slacks or messes up—it drags the whole group down. Been there, done that.

So I totally get Jasmine’s frustration.

🥴 My Ongoing Problem with Jackson’s Redemption Arc

But here’s where I still struggle…

I will NEVER forget what Jackson did in that second episode:
Blasting Jasmine online.
Messing with her reputation.
Jeopardizing her academic standing… all because she wouldn’t help him cheat.

And now… the show just wants me to move past it like it never happened?

Nah.

Yes, I see that he’s trying to make things right…
Yes, I see the “House of Second Chances” theme…

But actions have consequences.
And this whole “CJ and Janine pushing Jasmine to forgive him” thing? Feels forced.

Especially CJ with the whole, “Well, we all have bad days.”

Bro… this was more than a bad day.
This was a calculated attack on your daughter’s future.

đź’ˇ Good Writing, But Still Conflicted

Overall though… I can’t deny it:
The episode was really well written.

They balanced the A and B plots nicely, gave us character growth, and the dialogue felt natural—especially for the college scenes.

Do I like the execution of the Jackson redemption? Nope.
Was this still one of the best episodes of the season? Absolutely.
