Emmerdale’s Mackenzie makes failed escape attempt but fans ‘expose’ reason he won’t d.i.e

John Sugden has been holding Mackenzie Boyd hostage and fans are convinced that his harrowing situation might be what keeps him alive

Emmerdale fans have convinced themselves that Mackenzie Boyd (played by Lawrence Robb) will survive being held hostage by John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth). Friday’s bombshell episode concluded with the huge reveal that Mackenzie wasn’t k.i.l.l.e.d by John, but was instead taken captive in a bunker near the former army medic’s childhood home. John hunted Mackenzie through the woods after he discovered the truth about Nate Robinson’s (Jurell Carter) d.e.a.t.h. After fatally wounding him with a bow and arrow, it appeared John finished Mackenzie off with a blow to the head.

However, it was revealed during Monday’s instalment of the soap that John actually smashed the rock over Mack’s ankle, preventing him from running away. Inside the bunker, Mack kickstarted his risky plan to outsmart John. Realising he has been held hostage for one week, Mack realised that cooperating with John could be the key to his freedom. As the tense scenes developed, Mack encouraged John to open up about his other crimes. John eventually laid everything out, admitting to framing Ella Forster (Paula Lane), causing Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) to go into anaphylactic shock and accidentally m.u.r.d.e.r.i.n.g Nate.

With John attempting to justify his crimes, Mack began feigning loyalty to gain his trust.

As John tries to justify each dark deed, Mack puts on the performance of a lifetime by pretending to be on his side. He then promises John that he won’t reveal anything to anyone, and will return to Scotland in secret if John lets him go free.

But just as he appeared to have John on board, Mack made a huge mistake as he attempted to hit him over the head with a plank of wood.

Realising he’d been played, John raged: “Why would you do this? You tried to attack me! And I thought we were getting somewhere. I gave you one chance to prove you could be trusted and you blew it.”

He added: “I really wish you hadn’t done that. Your word is meaningless now and unfortunately for you, your word was the only thing keeping you alive.”

Despite the chilling threat, fans have theorised that Mack can’t d.i.e because he is the only person who knows everything about John, and is therefore the only one who can expose him.

One declared: “Ohhhh okay so Mack can’t d.i.e for now because John is confessing everything to him. He’s the missing link in case anything happens to John. He’ll be the only one to know the extent of everything John’s done.”

Another echoed: “Now we have another person who knows absolutely everything John has done. Meaning he’s a key witness and irreplaceable for the plot. Mack is sticking around it seems, yay!”

A third shared: “Mack won’t d.i.e. He’ll expose John.”

Sharing their theories, another added: “Surely John wouldn’t have done all this and kept him alive just to go and k.i.l.l him? Mackenzie won’t d.i.e I know it.”
