Sistas Episode 6 Review: Adjusting to a New Normal Brings Tension and Heartbreak
Episode 6 of Tyler Perry’s Sistas, titled “New Normal”, lived up to its name, pushing the characters into unfamiliar territory where change feels both necessary and heartbreaking. With relationships strained, new truths surfacing, and emotions running high, this episode delivered a mix of raw vulnerability and explosive drama that will leave fans questioning what comes next.
Sistas Season 9, Episode 6 Review: New Normal Falls Flat But Sets the Stage for Bigger Drama
After a strong streak of five consecutive episodes, Sistas Season 9 finally hit a rough patch with Episode 6, New Normal. While not completely unwatchable, the episode leaned heavily on filler moments, dragged with underwhelming subplots, and ultimately earned a disappointing 4/10 rating. But beneath the frustration, there were a few standout highlights — and some crucial setups for next week’s explosive Cutting Ties.
Sabrina’s Storyline: Overstaying Its Welcome
Sabrina once again dominated much of the runtime, but not in a way that worked. After spending earlier episodes declaring she was over Rich, she doubled back this week, caught in a storyline that feels inconsistent and directionless.
One glaring issue? Continuity. In Episode 5, Sabrina screamed about not reconciling with a “cheater,” even though she and Rich had technically broken up before he moved on. By Episode 6, she was back to sulking about him hooking up too quickly. It highlights a lack of care in Sabrina’s arc — especially frustrating after her earlier maternal storyline, which has now been abandoned for shallow romantic drama.
That said, Novi Brown delivered, elevating weak material with charm and screen presence. The scene with Maurice providing wardrobe “help” was one of the funnier moments, particularly his brutal honesty and antics with her outfits. Still, these comedic bits consumed too much airtime, dragging down pacing.
Andy vs. Bradley: A Scene That Saved the Episode
If there was one part of New Normal that truly hit, it was Andy’s tense confrontation with Bradley Benton. After learning that Dr. Cruz — Karen’s controversial doctor — had also neglected a former law school classmate of hers, Andy gathered a mountain of evidence and presented it to Bradley.
The frustration came when Bradley refused to believe any of it, hiding behind Cruz’s reputation as a golfing buddy. This scene, though maddening, felt painfully real. It captured the frustration of being dismissed when presenting undeniable proof — a moment many viewers, especially Black women, could relate to. Andy’s passion and emotional delivery carried the weight of this scene, making it the most impactful of the night.
Zach’s Breakdown and Mr. Keys’ Wisdom
Elsewhere, Zach continued grappling with grief, heartbreak, and the weight of his choices. His scene at the gym with Mr. Keys was surprisingly powerful. Keys shared his own story of loss, reminding Zach (and the audience) that life’s struggles don’t define us — our ability to endure does.
It was a touching reminder that Zach needs male support in his life. The show has often highlighted his resilience, but it’s refreshing to see him finally lean on someone for perspective. This moment felt authentic, grounded, and much-needed after so much emotional chaos.
Hayden and Fatima: The Unexpected Duo
In a lighter subplot, Fatima and Hayden had one of their most entertaining exchanges yet. Hayden, desperate to latch onto Fatima’s new high-profile athlete clients, promised to behave — only to be effortlessly shut down by her sharp wit and quick dismissal.
This unlikely pairing offered comic relief, but it also hinted at a shifting dynamic. Could mutual respect be forming between them? For now, it’s fun to watch Hayden fumble as Fatima asserts dominance, both professionally and personally.
Karen’s Struggles — and a Cliffhanger Ending
The episode closed on a somber note with Karen clearly unwell, shutting down emotionally and drifting through her day in a haze. Aaron’s concern was heartfelt, but nothing seemed to reach her. Even attempts at humor about Karen’s lack of cooking skills couldn’t mask the gravity of her pain.
Just when things seemed bleakest, a knock at the door brought the biggest twist of the night: Zach. The unresolved tension between Karen and Zach remains one of the series’ most complicated threads, and this cliffhanger sets up next week’s Cutting Ties for fireworks.
Final Thoughts
New Normal may be one of the weakest episodes of Season 9, but it wasn’t without purpose. Sabrina’s filler scenes dragged the story down, yet Andy’s heated exchange with Bradley and Zach’s emotional gym moment kept things from completely derailing.
It’s clear this episode was designed to set the stage for next week’s drama. Whether Cutting Ties delivers remains to be seen, but after this stumble, Sistas needs to bounce back strong.
Rating: 4/10
