Gemma Oaten has issued a devastating health update after her mother was rushed to the hospital last week. On Monday (August 24), the Emmerdale favourite took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to issue an emotional statement on behalf of her family. Each week, her mother, Marg Oaetn, would share a positive Monday morning message on their charity’s social media page, SEED, an eating disorder support service.

This week, the soap star stepped into her shoes and explained the reason for her mother’s absence to their 2,000 followers. She began: “I just wanted to explain why mum won’t be doing the Monday morning message for the foreseeable.

“Mum, Dad, and I are stepping back from SEED as of Friday (August 28), but many of you have probably seen Mum’s morning messages and seen her deteriorate health-wise, and she’s been hiding it from you all. But in real life, she has been in absolute agony with her back going into spasms; it’s just been horrendous.

“Long story short, she’s in the hospital, she went in on Wednesday night (August 19), and we found out that she’s actually broken her back. She’s now going to be awaiting surgery and possibly moving to Leeds.”

The actress went on to reveal that the family unit will be stepping back from work to care for their mother, and they thanked their supportive friends and loved ones for their help over the past week.

Wiping tears from her eyes, she went on: “We’re all trying to stay really positive, and if I could speak for mum on today’s Monday morning message, it is just to say: life is short, life is for living and never, ever, ever underprioritise your health.

“Always put yourself first, and I’m sure she would just be sending loads of love to you all. And I will just add: Mum, we all love you so much.” The TV presenter turned off comments on the post, but when she shared the update on her X account, fans flocked to the comments to pass along their well-wishes.

One user penned: “Aww, love. Such a worry for you and the rest of your family. I’m sure she is in the best place and will be fine. There’s so much they can do these days. Sending lots of love and a big hug.”

Another agreed: “So sorry to hear this, Gemma. I am sure everything will be okay. Best wishes to your mother as well as you and the rest of the family. Stay strong.” A third echoed: “Sorry to hear this, Gemma! Thinking of you and hope that she will get better, so sending loads of positive vibes your way.”
