Death in Paradise star Ben Miller has shared a candid admission about his role as Di Richard Poole. The actor, 60, admitted that he “really misses that character” and loved being a part of the show. After two series, fans of the BBC hit crime drama were left devastated when the detective got killed off at the start of series three.

Though written out, Ben did reprise his role in the BBC drama for a special one-off episode marking its 10th anniversary. When questioned about the prospect of delving deeper into his character through a prequel, he confessed: “If I wasn’t so ruddy old, I could play him in a prequel! I loved the character and I loved the show. It just came at a slightly unfortunate time in my life.”

Speaking to Radio Times, he continued: “But I do really miss that character. And funnily enough, Rob Thorogood [the Paraverse creator and writer] has carried on writing stories for Richard Poole, which is quite fun, so that’s a nice way to relive the character again.”

At the time, Ben chose to depart the Caribbean-set BBC series because he wished to protect his relationship.

It comes as Ben recently made a return to our TV screens on the new series of BBC comedy drama Austin.

The beloved star is back in the lead role as Julian Hartswood, a celebrated children’s author whose professional life is turned upside down by a social media controversy.
