Emmerdale Mary actress’ life from artist husband to ‘problems’ with co-star
Actress Louise Jameson has played Mary Goskirk in Emmerdale for a number of years
Actress Louise Jameson is currently delighting Emmerdale viewers as Mary Goskirk.
ITV soap fans will know that Mary first appeared in the Dales back in 2022, where she was introduced as Rhona’s (Zoe Henry) mother.
Shortly after her arrival, Mary notably opened up to Kim Tate (Claire King) about being a lesbian, after hiding her sexuality for her entire life. She then fell in love with a woman called Faye Helders (Jane Gurnett), who turned out to be a cruel scammer that stole Mary’s money.
Mary went through further turmoil when her latest love interest, Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough), instantly died in last year’s tragic limo crash. Suzy’s girlfriend at the time, Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick), was devastated to learn that Suzy was truly in love with Mary while being in a relationship with her.
Mary was also seen helping her family through April Windsor’s (Amelia Flanagan) heartbreaking storyline, which saw the youngster being manipulated by drug dealers Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) and Ray Walters (Joe Absolom).
Before appearing in the Dales, actress Louise was best known for playing Leela in Doctor Who. She was the companion of the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and a regular in the sci-fi programme from 1977 to 1978.
Whilst Leela was a close friend of the Doctor, Louise and her co-star Tom Baker didn’t get on very well behind the scenes.
However, the two actors have since repaired their relationship and become good friends. After returning to the TARDIS with Tom to celebrate his MBE earlier this year, Louise told Doctor Who Magazine: “Today’s been really lovely.
“It is so good to be here, to see Tom in such fine form. What a stroke of genius to put the TARDIS there, he was clearly right at home.”
She continued: “I’ve known Tom for a long time, and it is no secret that we had our problems back in the seventies. We’ve absolutely come full circle, and being invited to this, I feel I’m firmly on the friendship list.”
Away from the spotlight, Louise met her husband while filming for Bergerac in Jersey between 1985 and 1990.
She fell in love with artist Martin Bedford, with the couple tying the knot in 1990 at a picturesque church near Louise’s cottage home in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Martin became a stepfather to Louise’s two sons and also brought children from a previous marriage into their blended family.
However, after seven years of marriage, Louise and Martin decided to divorce. Speaking previously about their split, Louise said: “It got to the stage where had we continued living together we’d have been in real danger of losing that love entirely.”
She added: “We became careless of one another’s feelings and no longer put each other first. I’m an incurable romantic. I love intimate suppers, cards and flowers, all of that.
“I will never regret marrying Martin because he made me happy for such a long time. Perhaps I’m difficult to live with, but I can’t compromise my feelings. When things start to slip away, I think, ‘Right’s let’s work at it’. And if things still don’t work, I see no point in carrying on.”
