Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) has been killed in Emmerdale – and the list of suspects is very long.

The character was introduced to us last year, during a small storyline that looked at Jacob Sugden’s (Joe-Warren Plant) first experience working at an NHS hospital.

She made a return earlier this year, as part of the ITV soap’s efforts to shine a light on workplace bullying.

Dr Todd made Jacob’s life a living hell while they worked together. In April, she helped Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) give birth to baby Leyla, and then learnt that the little girl isn’t actually Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) and Jacob’s child.

The wicked woman then proceeded to blackmail Charity over the secret.

Everything changed a couple of weeks ago, when Doctor Todd raped Charity. She was confronted by Charity’s partner Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) in yesterday’s instalment, but walked away from the situation with a smile on her face, believing there was zero chance of her getting convicted for the attack.

The last we saw of this villain, she was lying on the floor surrounded by a pool of blood. This scene was a flashforward, meaning Doctor Todd will be killed by someone in the near future.

But who?

Let’s take a look at all of the possible suspects…

Mackenzie Boyd

Mackenzie told Doctor Todd in tonight’s episode that if she goes near Charity again, he’ll ‘bury her’.

He was a very angry man, but will Mack go as far as killing Caitlin?

Given everything that happened during their confrontation, he’s bound to be a prime suspect in the investigation, but will a great deal of focus on him mean he’s actually innocent?

Charity Dingle

Even though she’s pursuing the police investigation, Charity doesn’t have a lot of hope in her heart at the moment that Caitlin will get convicted.

This is because of the lack of evidence, the blackmail situation being treated as a different case, and the fact the police are calling what happened to Charity ‘sexual assault’, not rape.

If she loses faith, could Charity attempt to seek justice a different way?

Jacob Sugden

During the part of this story that saw Caitlin bully Jacob, he attempted to report her to HR. He was then told that Doctor Todd had filed a complaint against him, and had a case full of false evidence that implied Jacob was obsessed with her.

He gave up the fight, and stayed well away from her when she retired and began spending more time in the village.

If Jacob learns about what happened to Charity, could he get revenge on behalf of both of them?

Sarah Sugden

The possibility Sarah killing Todd in a violent rage seems unlikely, but there is a chance she will murder her accidentally.

This woman has hurt a number of people who Sarah loves – maybe she will do something after learning about Charity’s rape and the blackmail?

Vanessa Woodfield

Vanessa is still totally oblivious to the truth about love interest Doctor Todd. When Caitlin was bullying Jacob, Vanessa believed her comments about the young man being obsessed with her, and even went as far as saying that Leyla – his late mum – would be ashamed of Jacob for treating a woman so badly.

Vanessa will inevitably learn the full truth about Caitlin, which means she will discover what happened to ex Charity.

The local vet doesn’t scream violent murderer, but it’s possible she could be capable of ending Caitlin’s life amid her feelings of hurt, anger and betrayal.

Ross Barton

While Ross has made it clear that he intends to keep away from baby Leyla, discovering that Charity was raped and blackmailed by the woman who knew their secret could change everything for him.

On top of that, Mackenzie’s friendship with Ross is going to be destroyed now he knows the truth about Leyla.

Doctor Todd’s actions will hugely impact Ross’ life – but will this be enough for him to end hers?

Cain Dingle

Charity still hasn’t given the St Christopher necklace back to Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley). The rule that was created was to hand it back when she’s in some sort of trouble. No matter what it is, Cain vowed to be there for her.

If Charity hands it back and then tells Cain everything, will his next move see him confront Doctor Todd?

Ryan Stocks

Ryan Stocks (James Moore) was left devastated this week when he asked Charity why she’s been behaving so differently around him. When he questioned what exactly he’s done wrong, Ryan’s heart broke when Charity said ‘you were born’.

Being raped by Doctor Todd is bringing back memories of the abuse Charity suffered at the hands of DI Bails, who is also Ryan’s biological father. If Ryan learns about what his mum has gone through, will he try and take action?

Chas Dingle

Just like Cain, Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) will do anything to protect someone she loves.

The difference between these two siblings is that Chas has her head screwed on far more than Cain, so choosing to murder Caitlin doesn’t seem a possibility, as Chas will worry too much about covering it up, or going to prison and leaving Eve without a mum.

This increases the chance that, just like Sarah, Chas could kill Doctor Todd unintentionally.

Serena Sugden

Newbie Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) seems kind on the surface. She’s incredibly supportive towards Charity, and has had positive conversations with quite a lot of Emmerdale residents already.

The problem we have is that the last time a new Sugden was introduced, it was John, who enjoyed putting people in danger just so he could swoop in and save them.

Serena has already confirmed that she knew John – could she be going down a similar dark path to her relative?

Noah Dingle

Noah Dingle (Jack Downham) hasn’t been on our screens a lot this week, but what’s important to remember is that the moment which confirmed Doctor Todd’s death happens in the near future.

It means we have a period of time now to discover what occurs in the lead up to Caitlin’s murder, increasing the chance that Noah will attempt to do something if he discovers what his mum has been put through.

Noah has a criminal record after stalking and harassing Chloe Harris a couple of years ago. There is a darkness inside of him – but will it resurface in the coming weeks?
