Beyond Paradise fans ‘solve’ who Humphrey will make redundant in spin-off twist
Fans of Beyond Paradise think they've 'figured out' who will be leaving the show as Humphrey Goodman is forced to make a difficult redundancy decision at Shipton Abbott Police Station
Fans of Beyond Paradise believe they have ‘worked out’ how Constable Kelby Hartford will depart the programme.
The fourth series launched last month, with Detective Inspector Humphrey Goodman, portrayed by Kris Marshall, summoned to a meeting at South West police headquarters, where he unexpectedly encountered a new official.
The man identified himself as James Smith, prompting Humphrey to confess: “Sorry, I was expecting Chief Superintendent [Charlie] Woods.”
James proceeded to deliver some crushing information, informing Humphrey that he was required to restructure and reduce staffing levels at Shipton Abbott Police Station.
Humphrey appeared bewildered, highlighting that the team comprised just four officers, to which James retorted: “There should only be three!”, clarifying that the decision regarding redundancy would fall to Humphrey, reports the Mirror.
Subsequently, Humphrey shared his troubles with his wife Martha Lloyd, revealing: “They’re saying I’ve got to lose someone at the station. Apparently there should only be three of us at the station so I need to lose one of either Esther, Kelby or Margo…”
Martha responded with concern: “That’s awful! What will you do?” while Humphrey confessed: “I’ve no idea!”
In the second episode, Humphrey experienced a sleepless night, explaining to Martha that he was under pressure to make a decision about who would be leaving the police station, desperately searching for alternatives to preserve the whole team.
However, viewers believe they’ve worked out who will be departing, with many pointing the finger at Kelby. Flocking to Reddit, one user commented: “Zoe is obvious she wants to go travelling. I think Kelby might join her he seems to be looking for something. His exchange with Zoe indicated that they might be looking for a move for the two of them.
“I can see Zoe working as a waitress at Catherine’s Bar and Kelby working as a uniformed officer. Maybe have them in Dolphin Cove for an episode of Return to act as a bridge before he goes to St Marie.
“He could take the place of Mattie as a uniformed officer if Naomi leaves they’ll need a ds obviously Mattie will step up to take the mantle and they’ll need a uniformed officer to take her place so why not Kelby.”
A separate user posted: “The idea of Kelby going to St Marie is fantastic. It would be a whole new twist on the fish out of water British guy except he comes from a small fishing community so might fit in rather well.”
Elsewhere, another viewer chimed in: “I can see Kelby and Zoe as a good spin off in it’s own right” while another enthusiastic fan simply responded: “I like it!”
Beyond Paradise returns this Friday at 8pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
