Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley has warned his character Cain Dingle is a “man on the edge”. There have been concerns an exit is looming for the Dingle stalwart, who has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer and who’s marriage is facing an uncertain future.

Next week on Emmerdale, it’s clear that Cain is struggling. He prepares for his pre-op meeting, but when a member complains about how their relationship has suffered since their diagnosis, Cain struggles and can’t bear to stick around to hear the rest.

Charity tries to convince him to stop drinking and focus on his health but an angry Cain throws the whisky bottle and smashes Zak’s tankard. As he admits he is struggling to Charity, he explains how he is worried for his relationship – but things go awry when the pair reminisce about their previous relationship.

Speaking to The Mirror and other press, Jeff warned: “I think he’s a man on the edge now. Why anybody would choose to bring his granddaughter into stealing cars when he knows what she’s got at stake with the baby coming, I don’t know, but it just goes to show how desperate Cain is at the moment. He would do anything to get hold of money and save the farm.

“So this illness has really pushed him to the limit, because he just needs to find a solution to the farm issue, and it’s not just that, it’s also getting Moira out prison, getting her home, bringing the family back together, and then it’s the cancer on top of that. So he’s the man on the edge, and he’s doing things that he shouldn’t, or they shouldn’t, do.”

With Moira still in prison and Cain struggling to cope, are things going to end badly for the couple who are very much a favourite pair with the fans. There have been real fears it could all end in a split for Moira and Cain.

“The prostate cancer is a really important story for us to tell and to get out there, and we’re telling it as well as possible. But underpinning all of that is a love story between Cain and Moira, and it’s a massive test for their relationship with her being in prison and with his diagnosis on top. So we will wait and see what lies ahead for them,” he said.

Asked if Cain was missing Moira, he added: “Yeah, absolutely. I think she’s his rock and, like in any strong relationship, he’ll always turn to her more than anybody else, to speak to and confide in. There’s only a handful of other people, such as Sarah, Charity, Chas, that he would confide in, and also actually Liam, so he’s missing his wing woman, as it were.”

Elsewhere, Cain is determined to make sure the farm is a success. When Mack says they can’t afford a full cattle herd, Cain faces a major blow – and things only turn worse when Sam forgets a meeting, with Cain raging that his “farm-dream is over”.

Meanwhile, a hooded figure breaks into Emmerdale Farm in the dead of night – but what happened?
