Just two episodes into Season 10, Sistas has already divided the fanbase — and the center of the controversy is Karen, a character who hasn’t even appeared on screen. Some viewers have gone as far as saying: “If they mention Karen again next week, I’m done with this show.”
But… is that reaction a little too premature?
In reality, this is only the first season with a new writing team, and also the first season following major cast changes. Judging the direction of the show this early may be causing some viewers to miss the bigger picture — and one undeniable truth: Karen is still relevant to the story.
What shocked fans even more was realizing that in the 90-second recap at the start of the Season 10 premiere, Karen didn’t appear even once. Neither did Sabrina. And that absence feels jarring, because for Seasons 7, 8, and especially Season 9, Karen was essentially the emotional core of the series.
Season 9 revolved almost entirely around her: giving birth, nearly dying, losing one of her babies, postpartum grief, questions about whether she was mourning the child or her emotional tether to Zach, her rushed romance with Aaron, and finally the setup for their departure. For a character that prominent to suddenly vanish feels unnatural.
So how can a character who was once the heart of the show be erased overnight?
The answer is simple: she can’t be — at least not yet.
That’s exactly why Karen’s name is still being mentioned. Not as a cheap tease, but because the current storyline demands it. Everyone is reacting to Sabrina’s accident. That’s why Andy calls Karen. That’s why Andy looks at old photos of the girls — including Karen and Sabrina. Emotionally and narratively, it makes sense.
The issue isn’t name-dropping itself — it’s overuse without purpose.
Right now, a few references early in the season are completely natural. But if we reach the midpoint or end of Season 10 and Karen’s name is still being forced into every episode with no payoff, then frustration would be justified.
Television history has shown that a series can survive losing a main character — if it’s done right. Roseanne is the classic example. After Roseanne Barr was fired, the show reinvented itself as The Conners and continued successfully, largely because the writing adapted and gave other characters room to shine.
That’s the challenge Sistas is facing now.
Karen may be gone physically, but her presence still lingers — in memories, emotions, and unresolved connections. That’s not bad writing; it’s a realistic consequence of removing a character who once carried so much weight.
So the real question isn’t “Why do they keep mentioning Karen?”
It’s: How long will it take for Sistas to truly move forward without her shadow?
Season 10 has only just begun. This could be a necessary growing pain — or a warning sign that the void left behind is bigger than expected.
