EastEnders legend threatens to leave after issuing an explosive ultimatum
After over two decades on the show, one EastEnders icon has issued an ultimatum warning that she will leave Walford unless an 'evil' newcomer disappears from the soap
Despite having been in Walford for over twenty years, one EastEnders legend has vowed to quit the Square after issuing an ultimatum that could tear a core family apart.
The new year got off to a shaky start for the Slaters – Zoe is in prison for a m.u.r.d.e.r she didn’t commit, Kat has gone off to Corfu to catch the real m.u.r.d.e.r.e.r and Jean has started to believe the Devil has possessed Jasmine.
For months, viewers have been watching Jean spiral following the exit of her daughter Stacey and in a terrifying turn of events, she has become utterly obsessed with the latest addition to the family.
In Monday’s episode (5 January), Jean turned into Walford’s own Miss Marple and was determined to crack the mysterious case of who whalloped Anthony Trueman over the head.
She decided it must be Jasmine, after the teen admitted she was Zoe’s secret daughter and had been helping Chrissie Watts to stalk her. Things went down a dark path as Jean started to believe the Devil had possessed Jasmine and was turning everyone against her.
Tuesday’s episode saw everything get worse. Jean, who had taken to sitting in her room watching videos about the devil, decided it was her of Jasmine. “Either she leaves or I do,” she told Alfie Moon as the doof doofs sounded.
Jean arrived in Walford at the end of 2004, when Stacey became her primary carer. Jean had been diagnosed with bipolar and had spent some time on a mental health ward.
Over the years, Jean has had a number of storylines surrounding her mental health. In 2022, during a bipolar episode, Jean ran away to Southend and got lost in the hall of mirrors. Though she can hear Stacey calling for her, Jean believed she was due to marry Daniel Cook and walked into the ocean.
Stacey was thankfully able to save her mother and pulled her out of the sea. After breaking down in Stacey’s arms, Jean was sectioned. Some fans hope this will soon happen for Jean again.
“I hope Alfie doesn’t let Jasmine leave and gets Jean the proper helps she needs,” one fan wrote. Another praised the show for capturing what living with bipolar is like: “The stuff with Jean is very realistic though,” they said.
“A family member of mine was going through a psychotic episode when I first started going out with my now husband. The family member became really suspicious of my husband simply because he was a new person in my life and they thought my husband was out to get them.”
Another fan agreed: “Gillian Wright is a sensational actress when it comes to Jeans episodes. Like I’m actually scared for her and it makes me so sad. It’s a weird sentence but one thing this show has always done well (that I remember) is bipolar, it always hits hard.”
